A First Look Inside the National Museum of African-American History and Culture

NBC’s Lester Holt gives viewers a sneak peek inside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington D.C. on the Sept. 9 edition of TODAY.

In the clip, Holt and founding director Lonnie Bunch take viewers on a quick tour of the museum’s exhibits.

Bunch says the exhibits will start with slavery and will continue to the present-day Black Lives Matter movement.

However, he assures the anchor that the museum will not focus entirely on oppression.

Memorabilia from Black sitcom pioneers, liberation movements, and athletes like boxing legend Muhammad Ali and gymnast Gabby Douglas will be on display.

Furthermore, the director wants Americans of all races to see the museum and the history of Black people to close the racial gap in America.

“By helping people reckon with the unvarnished truth, maybe we can find some reconciliation and healing,” Bunch states.

After a 25-year fight by Rep. John Lewis, the museum will open its doors to the public on Saturday, Sept. 24.
