On the July 25 edition of Fox Sports’ “Speak For Yourself,” co-hosts Jason Whitlock and Colin Cowherd discuss Michael Jordan’s recent announcement that he will help tackle police brutality with $2 million donations.
Yesterday, the NBA Hall of Famer released a statement via The Undefeated that he will be donating to the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
This announcement rubbed many the wrong way.
Some thought the move was rigged or a public relations stunt.
“Michael Jordan is cutting a $2 million check to restore his image,” Whitlock believes. “His image has been taking a beating over the last 10 years.”
In the segment, Whitlock and Cowherd say Jordan wants to catch up to LeBron James, who has been making an impact as an athlete and activist as of late.
“For the first time in his life, he is getting poked and criticized and he can’t control it,” Cowherd explains. “… I think LeBron — being much more communal and much more captivated and interested in social issues — has brought out those who questioned ‘Where’s Michael Jordan?’ … I got to take a stand here. ”
Whitlock takes it a step further.
“When I look at the reaction, it feels rigged. And it feels like it is a total PR machine,” Whitlock adds. “Michael Jordan is now chasing LeBron James.”
