On Tuesday evening, Venus Williams and Serena Williams met for the 27th time in their careers and the fifth time at the U.S. Open. Serena went into the game with a 15-11 career record against her sister, including a 6-1 mark over their last seven matches.
Facing Venus for the first time in New York since 2008, Serena won the quarterfinal match, 6-2, 1,-6, 6-3, bringing her closer to her quest for the Grand Slam.
When the match was over, the two met at the the net and embraced, with the older sister congratulating her younger sibling on her win.
“It’s a really great moment,” Serena said on court after the win. “[Venus] is the toughest player I’ve ever played in my life and the best person I know. It’s going against your best friend and going against the greatest competitor in women’s tennis.”
On Thursday, she will play unseeded Robert Vinci of Italy, in the semi-finals. Vinci is currently 0-4 against Williams.
