New Mexico Man in Jail After Tossing Banana Peel At Dave Chappelle During Show

Dave Chappelle Anybody who attends a comedy show should expect some impromptu jokes hurled their way if they decide to do something like pull out a sketchbook and start drawing during the show.

That was the second most important lesson of the night for a pair of friends that attended a standup show in New Mexico featuring Dave Chappelle. The first was to never throw a banana peel at the veteran comic.

What was supposed to be a Monday evening of laughs and fun ended in one of the pals getting thrown into a jail cell after he decided to throw an old banana peel at Chappelle when the comedian began making jokes about his friend.

It all started when 30-year-old Christian Englander’s pal decided the middle of Chappelle’s show would be a great time to get in some good sketch time.

Sante Fe police Lt. Andrea Dobyns said the friend was allegedly drawing when the comedian noticed the lack of attention on the actual show.

When Chappelle asked for the man’s name, he delivered a faux moniker—“Johnny Appleseed.”

Chappelle rolled with the answer and began delivering a string of jokes surrounding the fake name.

According to police, Englander wasn’t too happy about his friend becoming a part of the show.

Police said he then tossed the banana peel at the actor, hitting him in the leg.

When being arrested, Englander acknowledged tossing the peel at Chappelle and officers said he seemed very intoxicated after being escorted out of the show.

Englander told police the peel was from a banana he had eaten earlier.

It isn’t often that Chappelle is finding banana peels flying his way while he’s on stage but this certainly isn’t the first time he’s dealt with a frustrated audience.

Back in 2013, Chappelle closed his show only 10 minutes into the act due to constant heckling from the audience in Hartford, Connecticut.

The banana peel-tossing incident comes as Chappelle tries to reignite his comedy career.

He has been making a gradual return over the past two years after he abandoned his Comedy Central show in 2005 before taking off to South Africa.
