An Ogoni man states his protest against the Shell Oil company in Ogoni land. Many claim Shell’s wasteful and destructive practices have caused conflict in the region, resulting in much bloodshed. Despite promises by the company, this has led to little compensation being paid out to local communities.
Shell
According to the Guardian, leaked memos from a 2009 lawsuit against the oil company, which settled out of court, revealed that Shell had frequently paid the Nigerian military to brutally quash protests and even helped organize raids on villages opposed to the drilling. The Ogoni people, native to Nigeria, were brutally attacked by the Nigerian military in the 1990s for protesting the destruction of their lands so that Shell could get to the oil they wanted. So many were killed that some Ogoni scholars label it a genocide.
