Although few Blacks attended college in the 1950s, both men married educated women. Malcolm X married Betty Shabazz, who attended Tuskegee Institute and Brooklyn State College School of Nursing. Coretta Scott King attended Antioch College in Ohio and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Both were homemakers as their husbands fought for civil rights. And both lost their husbands to assassin bullets.

The two men spoke out for oppressed people not just in America but all over the world, and they made clear their opposition to the Vietnam War.
