11 Disney Movies You Didn’t Know Were Racist

Sunflower from FantasiaFantasia, 1940

Disney created a “fantasy” world where the Black centaurs were basically slaves to the light ones.

The Crows from DumboDumbo, 1941

This classic film featured a group of “jive-talking” crows, who were clearly intended to be Black. Making matters worse, the lead crow was named Jim (Crow).

  1. Courtney Porter says:

I'm slightly confused of this article. What I am getting is that it is racist to have a character portray a black person but also racist to not include them

  2. Mara Solo says:

Why does the character have to be a monkey? Cl why not a cat or a dog or a fish or a snake or you know maybe a HUMAN nope it has to be a monkey..oh white people. Maybe you'll stop trying to cover up each others antics

  3. Courtney Porter says:

You're being just as bad by putting all white people into a stereotypical group. Js

  4. Courtney Porter says:

Mara solo. You're doing the same thing as white people by putting them all in a stereotypical group!

  5. Sandra Bradford says:

Courtney Porter yeah you are more than a little confused….you are a whole lot confused……you missed the entire point…..and I am not the least bit surprised that you did….miss the point….and you are most definitely clueless….why not just buy a vowel and call it a day…..

  6. Courtney Porter says:

Well excuse me Sandra Bradford! I'm apparently the scum of the earth for not understanding. No need to be so rude! I'm sensing a hint of racism in your comment "you missed the point… And I'm not surprised that you did" are you suggesting that because I am not black I will not understand this article?

  7. Courtney Porter says:

  8. Sandra Bradford says:

Courtney Porter again you missed the point…..I was unaware you were not black?

  9. Courtney Porter says:

I'm obviously ignorant, as I can see profile pictures of the people who comment, therefore you should be able to also.

  10. Sandra Bradford says:

Courtney Porter again you missed the point and I was unaware that you were not black? I will share with you this quote from Martin Luther King Jr. – “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."

  11. Courtney Porter says:

Although I appreciate the quote, I am
Neither stupid nor ignorant. I was being slightly sarcastic in my demeanor. Could you explain to me what else you may have meant by your comment that I quoted?

  12. Sandra Bradford says:

Courtney Porter ….I do not make rash nor uninformed judgment regarding someone race from their profile picture…..people can upload any picture they want to and can have nothing to do with their race

  13. Sandra Bradford says:

So as to my quote ……you are taking things on the top and not taking the time to delve deeper into the meaning behind the words….so I will leave it there

  14. Courtney Porter says:

So you're trying to tell me that someone else would put a picture of someone random on they're profile pic. Not a celebrity, a quote, or a drawn picture?

  15. Michelle Slaughter Daniel says:

Most Caucasians are not going to see what is wrong with this article by choice.. and use sarcasm to hide ignorance. But first minute u group them they change and call u the racist.. not all caucazoids are bad but the ones that blind themselves to the issue are the snakes that bite you in the end.

  16. Sundiata Keita says:

quit arguing with this girl. they play dumb on purpose. look up "dr umar revolution" on youtube where he tells you the rules white people live by. they just play dumb to confuse you

  17. Courtney Porter says:

No sir, I'm not playing dumb. Sarcasm again. Most people use sarcasm. It's not only because I'm not black. Thank you though. What I am trying to say is that some of these make sense, and yes I'd label them racist i.e. Fantasia. I don't, however see how it's racist to show a black man happy all the time after the civil war.

  18. Courtney Porter says:

Ma'am my point in the matter is that some of these do not show racism. A happy black man after the civil war? That shouldn't be considered racism, as he was probably happy that he was no longer enslaved, and our country was on it's way to racial equality. (Please note I did not suggest there was equality at that point). I do, however understand 100% how fantasia is racist. There is no doubt about that.

  19. Howard Ross says:

    They will never understand.

  20. Tara Scott says:

Really, you don't understand??? The characters that are black are either slaves, jive-talking or the bad guy!!! How is that a positive message to black or white children??

  21. Tara Scott says:

Every non-Caucasian is portrayed in a negative light, and if you are too blind to acknowledge that you are perpetuating racism and I pray your kids have a positive open role model who can admit when something is wrong! How many Disney princesses are brunette, why is "scar" the only black li

  22. Tara Scott says:

P.s. I am white and it is clear as day. People like you Courtney, scare me!

  23. Donielle Wells says:

Who put all whites in a group Courtney? NOBODY. If YOU believe that pointing out racism in Disney movies (whether you understand or not sarcastic or not or whatever you thought)
Is merely YOU projecting YOUR FEELINGS about the situation onto others.

  24. Courtney Porter says:

Teona and Pocahontas neither one is white… Them and Ariel are not blonde. Also disney now has Sofia who is brunette. And since when is scar black?

  25. Courtney Porter says:

Donelle, Mara solo grouped all white people together. She said " oh white people. When will you stop trying to cover it up"

  26. Courtney Porter says:

Might I add she even deleted comments denying she had said it

  27. Donielle Wells says:

Courtney I don't know if you truly don't understand or are being sarcastic or maybe you have just lived a sheltered life or maybe you are just young. So I will break it down for you.

  28. Donielle Wells says:

Yes. IT IS RACIST TO PORTRAY BLACK PEOPLE AS COONS, NATIVE AMERICANS AS SAVAGES, ASIANS AS SLANT EYES, ECT

  29. Donielle Wells says:

YeIT IS RACIST TO NOT INCLUDE OTHER RACES, OR SUBJEGATE THEM TO ROLES AND STEREOTYPES

  30. Donielle Wells says:

Would it be racist blacks owned ALL the telesion networks and decided the ONLY shows with white people would be Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and, My name is Earl.

  31. Donielle Wells says:

Excuse the typos I'm on my phone

  32. Courtney Porter says:

I'm not stating that none of it is racist. And are you suggesting there are no shows showing minorities outside of their stereotype? There are many! And showing Asians with slanted eyes is not racist, nor stereotyping. They literally have slanted eyes. That would be like saying it is racist for black characters to have dark skin and for white characters to be pale

  33. Donielle Wells says:

No its not the same. And there is more to the character than just the eyes Courtney. They are also portrayed as tricksters, evil, yellow in color, etc. You are attempting to over simplify the character.

Black people still coon for the TV Courtney. Don't get it twisted. Our good quality television IS BLACK OWNED for now at least. They sold out BET long ago.

  34. Courtney Porter says:

There is diversity in most shows now. There is a lower percentage of minorities because there is ACTUALLY a lower percentage of minorities in this country. There are shows and movies of
Minorities with little to no white people. Not many, but there are more white people in this country. And many of them are
Portrayed as having great careers, upper
Middle class etc. I'm not saying that none of it is racist, because there definitely is! Eg. The Friday movies, or the movie "white chicks". I'm not saying there is no racism in anything. I'm saying that it's not racism in a lot of cases that are called racist

  35. Courtney Porter says:

  36. Tara Scott says:

Courtney- you are a stubborn ignorant… You honestly don't think it's odd that "scar" is the only black lion??? They are all normal coloring except for the evil lion!

  37. Tara Scott says:

Snow White was the only brunette princess until probably jasmine, because no one is blond in Saudi Arabia, or the princess in the king and I, no blondes in Asia, or Pocahontas because native Americans do not have blond hair. You can pretend to see what you want, but it's there clear as day in some, and subliminal in others. You cannot grow until you leave your comfort zone. Please do not teach your kids hate!

  38. Courtney Porter says:

Yes he's darker! But that doesn't mean he's black! It's the good vs evil thing! Good is shown by light colors and bad by dark. That has nothing to do with skin color. Also, why are you suggesting I would teach my kids hatred? Have I at any point said the words " I hate people who aren't white? Also Hispanics and middle easterners also have darker skin. Why don't you think scar is one of them?

  39. Tara Scott says:

Can you hear yourself??? The racism is against all non whites, meaning people with darker shades…hence scar is dark and good is light…. That's the whole point!!!! Maybe you now get it, now that you've said it yourself.

  40. Donielle Wells says:

You said it COURTNEY dark/black is portrayed as bad light/white ia portayed as good. THATS THE PROBLEM. PERIOD THE END

  41. Courtney Porter says:

Again, skin color has nothing to do with it! Dark colors signify bad/evil NOT DARK SKIN COLORS and light colors represent good NOT LIGHT SKIN COLORS! For instance, the witch on Snow White is extremely pale, but her
Clothes are super dark! In the princess and the frog teona has dark skin and wears LIGHT COLORS! Stop twisting my words please, an read all of my comments not
Just the parts you want to read

  42. Donielle Wells says:

How can everything dark be bad BUT SKIN COLOR NOT INCLUDED. Please stop. You cannnot be that dense. If skin color has nothing to do with it why the jiggaboos? Do You understand that MY MOM HREW UP IN SEGREGATION? THAT MY GREAT GRANDPARENTS WERE SLAVES? That my grandmothers first husband was lynched???? So you understand that??? Do you know that thwy used black babies as aligator bait til the 60's. That there are documented cases of slavery through the 50's? That the police are shooting unarmed black men and women in the street BECAUSE DARK OS BAD AND WHOTE IS GOOD???

  43. Tara Scott says:

I give up, she'll never admit it there, because she would have to acknowledge there is white privilege… She is willingly ignorant. I fight with the love of my life over these same issues…it's so frustrating, but you can not make someone admit to seeing it, because then they can't ignore it without guilt!!

  44. Tara Scott says:

  45. Courtney Porter says:

Donnelle are you aware that the first slave owner in America was a black man? His name was Anthony Johnson, and he actually went to court and demanded keeping his slave john casor? So there is no reason to start with the " slave" stuff.

  46. Courtney Porter says:

P.s. Racism today doesn't equate to slave centuries ago!

  47. Donielle Wells says:

Girl you're getting stupider by the minute. Slavery was NOT CENUTRIES AGO. MY GREAT GRANDPARENTS AND MOST OF THEIR KIDS (MY GRANDMOTHERS SISTER WAS A SLAVE). And it wasnt by a black person either. 2nd Jim Crow wasnt centuries ago. 3rd racism EXISTS TODAY.

BLACK PEOPLE EARN 70 CENTS ON THE DOLLAR TODAY.
THEY CONTINUE TO OCCUPY NATIONS OF COLOR TODAY.
A BLACK PERSON IS BEING HARRASED BY THE POLICE TODAY.

WHITE PEOPLE ON FACEBOOK DEFENDING RACISM TODAY. YEAH IM TALKING ABOUT YOU COURTNEY YOU ARE EITGER RACIST IR STUPID PICK ONE.

  48. Tara Scott says:

Courtney enjoy being right in your own mind, and hell in the afterlife. You are hopeless.

  49. Courtney Porter says:

Thank you Tara! I will enjoy my correct views and I believe I won't be going to hell as I don't judge people period let alone based on the color
    Of their skin! 🙂 :-*

  50. Tara Scott says:

You are one of the most incorrect fools out there, that's why I worry about the raising of your children. God Is watching and he is the judge of us all.

  51. Donielle Wells says:

Ok do me.a favor name 3 black shows on broadcast television TODAY. BESIDES court shows and talk shows. You wont find one. EXCEPT "BLACKISH" And the title to that is so offensive I would never watch. Yes whites are a majority here somewhere between 50 and 60 percent. But they make up 95 percent of the characters. Not really a true representative of reality.

Friday, middle class??? They lived in Compton. Smokey was a pot head. Craig lost his job on his day off. The Dad was an idiot and the mom was the typical anrgy black woman. The fact that you believe Friday and white chicks is a good representative of blacks is the exact reason WE have a problem with this stuff.
Idk though you may not even know what middle class is. You may really believe poverty to be middle class. You may really believe that the characters on Friday are the best the black community has to offer.

  52. Anthony Rodriguez says:

I Guess Ppl Forget that Walt Disney was a Nazi

  53. Anthony Rodriguez says:

I Guess Ppl Forget that Walt Disney was a Nazi

  54. Courtney Porter says:

You read my comment wrong ma'am. I said white chicks and Friday was showing stereotypes. I was meaning shows like Martin or the Jamie foxx show are showing middle class black families. White chicks was actually stereotyping white people.

  55. Courtney Porter says:

Feel free to assume I'm racist dear. Racism would be believing that one race is better than the others or deserves more than the others, which I do not. But I've been called worse, so it won't break my heart. It's not my fault that you've misunderstood and misread all of the comments I've posted on here

  56. Kiersten King says:

Guys, I find the Siamese cat one hilarious, with the slanted eyes. THEY ARE SIAMESE CATS. THATS WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE.

  57. Hannah Fried says:

Courtney Porter I'm more likely to call you a clueless white girl blind to her own privilege.

And before you start boo-hooing, I'm white too.

  58. Mrbeez Keith says:

The sad things is that all thise movie i saw on tv as s kid i thought was funny but now that much older i would not

  59. Rob Grant says:

Did Capt. Obvious create this list? The entire Disney collection is full of this stuff.

  60. Verna Barnes says:

How come none of these movies portray a balxk person then as being successful completion r having a high end job? All the minorities are shown as if they are slow or somthing

  61. This list is so unnecessarily inflammatory. There are a couple of true examples but for the most part, the list is drivel. Just pissing people off for no reason. The Little Mermaid and Jungle Book references are weak. And Song of the South was not racist. "A black man who is happy all the time?" Lazy.

  62. Honestly, you should be more concerned with the slavery existing today in your 'mother' country and be less concerned with the one that ended in 1867, an entire century and a half ago in this country. Further, no one defends racism unless you think that only a white person can be racist. In fact, your entire rant is full of racism against white people, whom you, for no other reason than their color, aim your rant toward. That certainly is the pot calling the kettle black.

And as for Hannah's comment to Courtney regarding her so called privilege, let me say that everyone has privilege if you get off your duff and work for it. Unless you are the minority in this country who are filthy rich, every single one of us poor saps have to work for a living. Am I privileged? You damn right I am. I am privileged to wake my arse up every morning so that I can haul my arse out of bed and go to work for 9 hours to pay for all the things I want to have. No one gives me a thing, I work for it. There is your privilege. If you want something that you have to take from someone else, then you are a thief plain and simple. If you want privilege, say thank you for your life, and get out of that bed and get a damn job.

  63. You can not place today's perception on things that are long past. It simply is irresponsible to call a 1950's anything racist since that was not considered racist at that time in our history. Just as slavery was a way of life in the 1800's. Girls being married off to grown men all through history. Women being raped by their husbands. None of today's ideals apply to the past way of life.

People are so damn concerned with the past that they refuse to see the present. How about we show some concern for the racism and slavery alive in today's world? No one wants to talk about that. Because no one wants to admit that racism is alive in every color aside from white. That puts too much responsibility on those who are not white and would force a confrontation on their own beliefs.

  64. Please use proper English speech..
