Lupita Nyong’o Lands First Vogue Cover, Talks ‘Star Wars’ and Her Big Year

Lupita Nyong’o has inked her “it” girl status by landing the July cover of Vogue magazine.

The 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner and soon-to-be Star Wars: Episode VII star burst onto social media with the announcement Thursday.

“This Summer, I am totally COVERED!,” the 31-year-old tweeted, sharing a pic from her Marrakech, Morocco, shoot and including a link to the Vogue story. She promptly changed her avatar to Mikael Jansson’s cover shot.

In the mag, she wears Prada, Jonathan Saunders and Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci as she strolls through spice markets and lounges at a resort — a far cry from her student-in-a-sweatshirt days at Yale, where she earned a master’s in 2012.

The profile focuses on her footprint in the fashion industry as well as touching on her upcoming projects.

After much bewilderment about why she hadn’t quickly signed on to any projects after the Oscars, it was confirmed recently that she would appear in J.J. Abrams’ installment of Star Wars and voice Raksha in Disney’s live-action reboot of The Jungle Book.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to be working in these fantastical realms,” she told Vogue‘s Hamish Bowles of the enthralling storytelling of the galaxy far, far away. “They’re worlds away from 12 Years a Slave, that’s for sure — but that kind of diversity is what dreams are made of.”

The actress agreed that it’s been a surreal year.

“It just feels like the entertainment industry exploded into my life,” she told the mag. “People who seemed so distant all of a sudden were right in front of me and recognizing me — before I recognized them!”
