New York City

It goes without saying that New York would have a spot on this list. It is sometimes dubbed the “hip-hop mecca,” so it would make sense that many of the pioneers of the hip-hop game would come from the Big Apple.

New York is home to artists such as Tupac Shakur, Mos Def, Alicia Keys,  Sean Combs,  50 Cent, Nicki Minaj, Foxy Brown and of course Jay Z and Beyonce.

However, it is not just music artists who have their mail delivered to the concrete jungle. Actors such as Diahann Carroll, Marlon Wayans, Angela Bassett, Denzel Washington, Sanaa Lathan, Mekhi Phifer, Cicely Tyson, Kerry Washington also grace the big and small screens before returning to their homes in New York.
