Janelle Monae, ‘The Electric Lady”, released a new track today called “What Is Love”. The new single is from the soundtrack of the upcoming animated film “Rio 2”. Monae dropped the new single and an accompanying video to promote the movie soundtrack, which will be released this month. As reported by spin.com:
“Just days after one of the most stacked Best Original Song Oscar lineups, Janelle Monae has dropped her own potentially award-winning entry. Coming from the soundtrack to the animated flick ‘Rio 2’, ‘What Is Love’ blends soul, gospel, funk, and tropical vibes that we can imagine being just as at home on a big stage as playing over a choreographed pack of CGI parrots. While Monae gets rightfully compared to her pal Prince, this track finds her belting out falsetto like a young Michael Jackson.”
Janelle Monae has been on a tear over the last year. Her latest album “The Electric Lady” was critically acclaimed, and she’s also beginning to recognized more in the industry as she was named Billboard’s 2013 “Rising Star.”
The “Rio 2” soundtrack will be in stores on March 25 and the movie will be released on April 11.
