“The decade’s biggest hip-hop stars gathered under one roof as Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine hosted the launch of Beats Music during Grammy weekend on Friday night. For over an hour, L.A.’s Belasco Theater was transformed into a hip-hop head’s dream as a ’90s rap playlist was brought to life curated by Eminem’s manager Paul Rosenberg.
“Fab Five Freddy served as guest host with DJ Jazzy Jeff rocking the 1s and 2s. Ice Cube set things off with “It Was a Good Day” followed by Cypress Hill with “Insane in the Brain.” The Geto Boys, Souls of Mischief, and The Pharcyde brought a blast from the past with their classics.”
Although the party wasn’t explicitly themed as a ’90s event with performances that also included Method Man and Redman, Blackstreet as well as Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony, it was hard for people to not be reminiscent. As also reported by rap-up.com:
“Method Man and Redman tag teamed for “How High,” Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony brought back the “Thuggish Ruggish Bone,” and a dapper Nas performed “Nas Is Like” and “If I Ruled the World.”
“The evening’s host, Dr. Dre, spread some “California Love” on stage joining BLACKStreet for their 1996 hit ‘No Diggity.'”
Dr. Dre and the Beats team had great timing for the launch party. Most of the stars will be in one place at the Grammys on Sunday.
