Spike Lee: ‘Never Heard Of’ Designer Claiming ‘Oldboy’ Poster As His Work

TCM Road To Hollywood / New YorkSpike Lee is not having the best holiday where his business is concerned. The veteran filmmaker’s latest film “Oldboy” is posting unimpressive numbers in theaters over the long holiday weekend. The film is expected to earn under $3 million.

In addition, Lee came under attack from designer Juan Luis Garcia, who claims the design for the film’s poster was his work. In an open letter aimed at Lee, Garcia wrote that he was never compensated after turning down an “an insultingly low offer.”

He added, “I tried to negotiate but they refused. I make the same amount of money in a single day as a photo assistant as what they offered, and I had worked on these almost exclusively for two months.”

Lee, meanwhile, said through Twitter: “I Never Heard Of This Guy Juan Luis Garcia. If He Has A Beef It’s Not With Me. I Did Not Hire Him. Do Not Know Him. Cheap Trick Writing To Me. YO.”

After a few of his followers urged Lee to pay Garcia, the director added: “Why Should I Pay Someone Who I Never Met Nor Had Any Contact With Ever? He Never Made Any Deal With Me. Why Don’t You Pay Me For Your Stupid Text On Thanksgiving Day?”
