Was The Kendrick Lamar Cypher Aimed At Drake?

kendrick-lamar-cypherThe “2013 BET Hip Hop Awards” aired on Tuesday and along with the show came the already-hyped rap cyphers. The Kendrick Lamar cypher that featured his TDE family was the most anticipated  for the night, and maybe the most of the entire show. In a clip that came out a few weeks ago, the Compton rapper seemingly takes a swipe at Drake when referring to an “emotional rapper.” Now that the cypher has aired in its entirety, some people still think the diss was aimed at Drake, even though it isn’t completely clear. As reported by consequenceofsound.net:

“As previously reported, Kendrick used his freestyle to hit back at Drake. Last month, Drake played off the importance of Kendrick’s verse on “Control”, saying, “[Kendrick] is giving people moments. But are you listening to it now, at this point in time? Okay… It was real cool for a couple weeks. If I asked you, for example, how does that verse start?

“In response, Kendrick rapped in his cypher, ‘And nothing’s been the same since they dropped ‘Control’/And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes/Ha-ha, jokes on you.’ He gave ScHoolboy a high-five and continued, ‘I got my thumb on hip-hop… and my foot up your ass.’And he just kept going and going, spitting one vicious zinger after another (‘I spilled blood on my apron cooking this up,’ ‘If you need me just call on me/Hold up… wait up/Your career ain’t sh*t unless you got some Kendrick in it,” and ‘You’re scared to death/You’re scared to look in the mirror when Kendrick is near you/King Kendrick.’)”

Where the confusion comes in though is that many rappers have responded to Kendrick’s “Control” verse, including rapper Papoose, who told Drake to fall back because he was certain Kendrick was talking to him.

Time will tell if Drake will take offense and respond to Kendrick, or if K. Dot will clear up the ambiguity.
