New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith can finally put the QB competiton with Mark Sanchez behind him. Why? Because Sanchez’s season is officially over.
The quarterback had season-ending surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday. He tore the labrum in his throwing shoulder after he was hit hard by New York Giants defensive tackle Marvin Austin. The incident happened as Sanchez was going through a close, summer-long competition with Smith for the starting quarterback spot.
The surgery to repair his torn labrum was performed by Dr. James Andrews, the team announced. Sanchez said after seven weeks of rehabilitation, he was advised by Andrews and other doctors to undergo surgery.
“I’m very disappointed that I can’t be out there to help my team on the field,” Sanchez said in a statement. “But I’ll continue to help our team in whatever capacity I can.”
