Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey is perhaps the most well-known black philanthropist, uplifting our communities in the U.S. and abroad. Oprah’s Angel Network, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation have donated more that $300 million toward helping black people all over the world.
During a December 2000 visit with the former South African President Nelson Mandela, Oprah pledged to build a school in South Africa–which she did. As that commitment broadened, she contributed more than $40 million toward the creation of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. The school opened in January 2007 and serves grades seven through 12.
On Jan. 21, 2012, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls graduated its first senior class of 72 students.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka
Yvonne Chaka Chaka is a South African singer who rose to fame during the racist apartheid regime that oppressed her country.
While touring the Africa, the singer, dubbed the “Princess of Africa,” recognized the impact poor health and disease are having on black people on the continent. Thereafter, she created the Princess of Africa Foundation, which tirelessly campaigns for medication and bed nets that will help to end malaria — a preventable and curable disease that kills 3,000 people in Africa every day.
Chaka says, “We want to raise awareness and take initiative to eradicate this needless disease. People need to know more about malaria because it kills almost one million Africans a year, most of them children.”
Because of her initiative, Chaka was named one of the Top 100 Heroes of South Africa by the Star Newspaper.
