On Thursday the Oprah Winfrey Network announced that it has secured the television rights to ”Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”
The film, which stars Academy Award Winning actor Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, and Mariah Carey, has grossed over $100 million in the box office.
OWN now has the rights to broadcast the film first on basic cable beginning in 2017.
OWN president Erik Logan has this to say: “On the heels of the film’s fantastic debut, we couldn’t be more excited to showcase this incredible movie for our viewers.”
“OWN is the ideal broadcast home for this film, which has had such a tremendous response from theatrical audiences,” said Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. “It’s been an honor to work alongside Oprah Winfrey, whose performance and support on the picture have been second to none, and we’re thrilled that her network has come on board.”
“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” is currently in its sixth week in theaters, with maybe one more week to go before it transitions to DVD and VOD.
