Jill Scott is a powerhouse in her own right, but unlike singers like Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, she isn’t eager to use her voice to land movie roles.
While promoting her upcoming film “Baggage Claim” Scott told TheGrio:
“I really wanted to separate the two, because I love them both and I wanted to be taken seriously as an actress. I took on a role like the The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in order to expand all of my horizons. I just didn’t want to cross-pollinate.”
Scott hasn’t totally closed the door, however, on using her voice on film. The 41-year-old performer issued a caveat if she’s to ever go back on her word:
“Unless the character is so left of right, and she happens to sing. And then I have to find a character voice as well. Because I won’t use my voice. I’ll use the voice that comes through this character.”
We’re a bit biased, but watching Scott sing on the big screen would be a joy.
