Senator John McCain was invited by the event committee although he voted against creation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday in 1983. He declined due to unspecified “scheduling conflicts.”

Mike Huckabee

Former  Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee declined his invitation, saying  he couldn’t “rearrange things” like his radio show, which could have been broadcast live from the event if he wanted to, according to Mediaite. Minutes after President Obama concluded his speech on Wednesday, Huckabee did tweet out a song parody blasting first lady Michelle Obama‘s efforts to get kids to eat healthier.
