Mark Sanchez to Start Over Geno Smith in Jets 1st Preseason Game

Mark Sanchez will get the start at quarterback when the New York Jets face the Detroit Lions in their preseason opener.

Coach Rex Ryan announced Tuesday that Sanchez will start, but Geno Smith will also get snaps with the first team as well.

“Mark will start the game, but we’ll play Geno with the ones as well and we’ll kind of keep that rotation going,” Ryan said. “Haven’t really decided yet what the play time will be with the ones, or snaps and all that.”

Ryan is hoping that Smith will face the Lions’ first-team defense so that he can evaluate his quarterbacks equally.

“The preseason doesn’t end after this first preseason game,” Ryan said. “We’ll take it through as much as possible, we said this is going to be equal competition and it is going to be a competition and I think that’s exactly what it is.”

The coach also added that he wanted to see how his quarterbacks react against the Detroit pass rush.

“I think that will be good, we’ll see that, see how guys react to it,” Ryan said. “We’ve got to protect the football. We’ve got to be smart with the football.”
