During a Jets’ Green & White scrimmage on Saturday night, the quarterback heard the familiar sound of contempt. The fans responded as they did last year at end of regular season, booing the quarterback after he threw an interception to Antonio Cromartie, tripped over his feet and fell on another play.
“I think that’s bullcrap,” Cromartie said, defending Sanchez. “My thing is, if you’re going to be a fan, be a fan. You don’t come out here and boo anybody.”
On the other hand, the crowd cheered quarterback Geno Smith during the scrimmage. Smith, a rookie, reportedly played well in the Saturday night Green & White scrimmage.
“Guys are responding to me,” Smith said after the scrimmage. “I think that’s a part of them just realizing that I’m a hard worker.”
According to reports, Smith looked great on his opening drive. He threw a pass for nine yards to Stephen Hill on a slant and connected with Clyde Gates for 10 on another slant. He also rifled a very difficult 15-yard pass to Gates on a sideline route.
“I think Geno completed some passes that you don’t see rookies make,” Cromartie said.
The quarterback competition between Smith and Sanchez will possibly continue until the first game of the season. More details coming soon.
