Winning: Spike Lee Passes $500K Mark on Kickstarter; Shemar Moore Surpasses IndieGoGo Goal

While Spike Lee is still on the grind to raise $1.25 million for his next joint, another celebrity campaign surpassed its goal and is still counting, despite sliding under the radar.

Criminal Minds actor Shemar Moore is wrapping up an IndieGoGo campaign with a goal of $500,000 for a romantic comedy titled The Bounce Back, in which he’ll star along with Nadine Velazquez (Flight). With three days left, Moore has managed to surpass his goal by accumulating $610,000 in donations.

Moore initially sought to finance The Bounce Back on  Kickstarter.com, aiming for $1.5 million in crowdsource funds. But after raising only $250,000 toward the goal, he opted to abandon Kickstarter for their competitor IndieGoo, where he obviously faired better.

Lee, on the other hand, has seen success so far with his crowdsourcing endeavor on Kickstarter.  The filmmaker is on pace to reach his $1.5 million goal for an unnamed movie that he described as about “human beings who are addicted to blood. Funny, sexy, and bloody (and it’s not ‘Blacula’)…”

To date Lee has raised over $538,000, with 19 days left.  If he remains at this pace he should get his desired outcome.

Both Moore and Lee have drawn criticism for using crowdsourcing websites to raise funds to make movies.  Lee responds to some of the criticism here.

Both men have defended the move by pointing out that crowdsourcing is a legitimate route for indie filmmakers and that is how they classify themselves.
