Major Paper: Atlanta Falcons Pay Over $100M to Keep Matt Ryan

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has inked a new extension deal with the team that will make him one of the top-paid players in the NFL.

“In every sense of the word and every definition, Matt is a franchise quarterback,” Falcon’s owner Arthur Blank said. “I’ve said many times, we’re not going to really rest until we have [Super Bowl] rings.”

Ryan’s new contract is reportedly worth $103.75 million over five years, which averages $20.75 million per year. In the first three years, Ryan will take home $63 million, according to ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

“You’ve got to have guys like Matt Ryan that have the drive and desire to be the best they can be,” coach Mike Smith said.

Last year the quarterback had the best season he has ever had. He threw for 4,719 yards and 32 touchdowns and only had 14 interceptions, ultimately completing 68.6 percent of his passes.
