In Pacific Rim, Idris Elba is portrayed as a strong leader, Stacker Pentecost, a war commander who remains poised as he faces eminent destruction of the world at the hands of giant alien monsters called the Kaiju.

In a last ditch effort to protect mankind from extinction, Pentecost has to make a riveting war speech to rile up what little is left of surviving troops. In an interview with, Idris recalls how President Obama, as well as British Prime Minister James Cameron, helped him deliver that inspiring speech on film.

Elba says in the interview that he watched many Obama and Cameron speeches along with those made by Russell Crow in Gladiator and Mel Gibson in Braveheart. The Wire actor also credited Obama’s good posture and tone as being his example of how to give a great speech.

This is how Idris Elba described his Stacker Pentecost character to

“(My character) is a lifelong soldier and a natural-born leader. No matter how big the problem is, his attitude is, ‘I’m going to find a way to fix this’. As a strategist and a soldier, his only job is to figure out how to survive and win.”

It’s good to see Hollywood warming up a little bit more to the idea of portraying Black men as strong leaders.

Pacific Rim boasts a stellar cast alongside Elba which includes Charlie Hunnam, Rob Kazinsky, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Max Martini. The film is set for a July 12th release.
