The Winnie Mandela biopic, starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard has finally been given a release date after a series of false starts.
One Village Entertainment and Image Entertainment announced the film, now titled Winnie Mandela (previously titled Winnie) which is set to debut in USA theaters September 6.
The biopic, based on an adaptation of Anné Mariè du Preez Bezrob’s biography, Winnie Mandela: A Life explores the personal and political life of the woman who was married to world-renowned activist and former South African President, Nelson Mandela. The movie details the story of her struggle for freedom during the Apartheid era.
Before a single frame was shot, it came under fire primarily over Hudson being cast as Winnie Mandela without input from the iconic figure.
Bill Bromiley, Chief Acquisitions Officer for Image Entertainment, spoke in defense of Hudson and Howard and this is what he said according to Shadow & Act:
“Both Jennifer Hudson (as Winnie) and Terrence Howard (as Nelson Mandela) deliver powerful performances that depict the lives of two influential people of our time. They are a force to be reckoned with on screen, showcasing the Mandelas’ journey through their struggles and triumphs.”
TD Jakes (via his TDJ Enterprises) will “present” the film, which is produced by André Pieterse (Ironwood Films) and Michael Mosca (Equinoxe Films).
