It’s the age of the Korean directors coming to Hollywood. Park Chan-wook arrived earlier this year with the great Stoker. Before that was Kim Ji-woon with The Last Stand. And now there’s Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon-ho. His Memories of Murder, The Host, and Mother are all modern masterpieces. And his cast here is dynamite. Chris Evans, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer, Song Kang-ho, and more!
The movie is based on a French comic book. The plot is as follows:
Snowpiercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred* perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train, but a revolution brews.
Snowpiercer comes out some time this year. Here is a one-minute Korean promo for the film, which features a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff and a few scattered bits of footage from the film itself:
*I assume this is a translation wonk. Or maybe the engine really is a holy object.
