“Y’all are going to college!”
So it was decreed at the very end of 21 Jump Street, the most surprisingly fantastic movie of recent years. It immediately left every hip audience member craving more of the antics of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s inept narc bros. Somehow, a movie based on a cheesy 80’s TV show was really, really great and funny.
After the film took the box office by storm, rumors swirled about that there will be a sequel. Those rumors were later confirmed, although a precise release window for the new movie could never be pinned down. But that’s changed now. At CinemaCon, Sony announced that they are developing the sequel for a 2014 release date.
Frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! Now yes, comedy sequels are usually terrible… or almost always terrible… or always terrible. And we don’t know who from the first movie will be coming back, besides, presumably, Hill and Tatum. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will probably be busy with their LEGO movie and holy cow THAT is a thing that’s happening what. But I want to remain optimistic. And even if it’s awful, we’ll always have the first one.
