4 Deaths in Venezuela Post-Election Violence

Violence over Venezuela’s disputed presidential election has caused the deaths of four people, according to state news agency AVN.

It was reported Tuesday that two people died in Miranda state, which includes part of Caracas; one in Tachira state on the border with Colombia; and another in western Zulia state.

Both sides in the deadlock over Sunday’s vote have called on their supporters to attend rival rallies.

National Guard troops fired tear gas and plastic bullets on Monday to disperse students protesting against the official results in the presidential election as Nicolas Maduro, the acting president, was formally declared the winner.

The students hurled chunks of concrete and stones back at the troops on a highway in Caracas.

The demonstrators tried to reach the western part of the capital, where most of the government is headquartered.

Henrique Capriles, the opposition candidate, had called on electoral authorities to suspend plans to officially proclaim Maduro as the winner of the election.
