Fire damaged one fourth-floor room of the old Butler Street YMCA building in downtown Atlanta early Thursday morning.
The fire alarm to 22 Jesse Hill Jr. Dr. NE came in just before 1:30 a.m. On arrival, the first crews asked for a second alarm and reported flames showing from a fourth floor room.
Firefighters immediately began going through the building, making sure everyone was out safely. One man needed an escort down the inside stairs.
The blaze was quickly brought under control and the second alarm crews were not needed.
Fire officials said the building is being used for transitional housing and only five men were living there. All escaped without injury.
Cause of the fire is under investigation, but may have started with an argument between a male resident and a woman. One resident told 11Alive News the woman set fire to the room’s curtains, and although there was an attempt to extinguish the flames, they flared up later. Officials are investigating that story.
