A new clip for Stoker has been released online via Vulture, showcasing the somewhat creepier side of Matthew Goode and Nicole Kidman.
Stoker, of course, is director Chan-Wook Park’s first attempt at a feature film completely in English, and judging from the already released pictures and trailer, it looks as if language holds no bearing when it comes to good filmmaking. This latest clip demonstrates this fact quite seductively through a seemingly secret slow dance.
Stoker follows Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode as a grieving daughter, widow, and brother respectively. Wasikowska plays India, who, while suspicious, begins having a certain infatuation with her recently discovered Uncle Charlie. At the same time, her increasingly mentally ill mother Evelyn — played by Kidman — is also being seduced by her brother, a man who seemingly has ulterior motives in not wanting to leave. Matthew Goode seems to be a spot on casting choice for such a role.
This most recent clip from Stoker demonstrates Chan-Wook Park‘s style in stunning fashion. The director has a knack for blending all elements of cinema to create an atmosphere filled with both intrigue and dread. While a simple slow dance wouldn’t normally induce such feelings in a viewer, Park combines hushed voices, a voyeuristic daughter’s viewpoint, and classic soundtrack to invoke both interest and disgust.
Stoker is almost here, as it will see limited release in the US on March 1. Until then, be sure to check out the Vengeance trilogy — Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance — or even his take on the vampire genre, Thirst, to see what Chan-Wook Park is all about — or if you have the ability to stomach what he’s serving.
