The Emmy winner, best known for his five seasons spend on Friday Night Lights, is set to play Cardinal Thomas Duffy “a charismatic yet enigmatic archbishop of New York whose progressive leanings excite some and alarm others within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church.”
Also starring in the upcoming political drama is Matthew Goode (Matchpoint and Watchmen), who will play Cardinal Marco Malerba. Malerba is known as the Pope’s closest confidante who has a dark side, and holds a position that is deep in the inner circle of the Vatican. Sebastian Koch will also star as a politically ambitious cardinal infamous “for his proven abilities to ruthlessly wield power within the Church hierarchy.”
Paul Attanasio, who also wrote the Fox medical drama House, will write the one hour Vatican script and on tap to direct the series is Ridley Scott (Prometheus and The Good Wife).
