Sandra Bullock Set to Star in 'Despicable Me' Spinoff

Sandra Bullock is set to showcase her voiceover talent alongside the lovably inept yellow henchmen made famous in Despicable Me next year, starring in a spinoff simply titled Minions.

Deadline has reported that the famed actress is set to play Scarlet Overkill (subtle, right?) an “Audrey Hepburn-like” femme fatale with high fashion sense and even higher aspirations concerning world domination. Scarlet Overkill’s agenda is also girl-power oriented, as she seeks to become the world’s first female super-villain in the 1960s.

Along with Sandra Bullock’s voiceover ability, Minions will showcase the backstory of the yellow henchmen, which establishes that they have been around since the beginning of time. Of course, through their endearing incompetence, the Minions have thwarted plan after plan of even the most skilled villains. The story picks up in the 1960s, where the Minions have fallen into a collective depression, causing three among their ranks to set off and find a new master and wind up at a villain convention. Cue Scarlet Overkill.

2010’s Despicable Me was an instant success amongst critics and filmgoers alike, and it makes complete sense that both a sequel — Despicable Me 2 is due this summer — and a spinoff are being made. Pierre Coffin, the mastermind behind the first two films, is set to helm the project with Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch, the man behind 2011’s Puss in Boots, has already penned the script.

Sandra Bullock’s talents have yet to be featured in an animated film, but something tells us she’ll be able to pull it off with flying colors. Her comedic touch has been equally praised and degraded in such films as Miss Congeniality, The Proposal and All About Steve, earning her a spot in the heavily anticipated comedy The Heat. While Sandra Bullock has mostly been praised for her dramatic work in such films as The Blind Side, Crash, and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, it seems she’s committed to letting loose for a spell.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait quite some time for Minions, as it’s not set for release until December 2014. We’ll be sure to update you in terms of who will be joining Sandra Bullock, so be sure to check back.
