Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are reuniting for a third World War II based miniseries to debut on HBO. The untitled new miniseries will focus on the Eighth Air Force base, dubbed “The Mighty Eighth,” fighting against Germany.
As seen on The Wrap, the new series will center on the “harsh physical, psychological and moral challenges” the men of The Mighty Eighth faced. The series will largely draw from Donald L. Miller’s book, Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany.
Spielberg and Hanks are no rookies when it comes to successful war based miniseries. The dynamic duo first joined forces for the critically acclaimed miniseries Band Of Brothers back in 2002. Band Of Brothers won six Emmy’s, including Most Outstanding Miniseries. Hanks and Spielberg did it yet again in 2010 with The Pacific. The navy based miniseries won eight Emmy’s, also earning the title of Most Outstanding Miniseries.
The new miniseries will certainly garner some critical attention and I wouldn’t be surprised if it also the clinched Most Outstanding Miniseries Emmy. Perhaps I’m getting a little ahead of myself since this series hasn’t even been named, but there’s no doubt that Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg know what they’re doing and are a force to be reckoned with.
Stay tuned for more updates on the newest HBO miniseries.
