Carmelo Anthony Defends Wife LaLa Against Kevin Garnett

What do LaLa Anthony and Honey Nut Cheerios have in common? According to Kevin Garnett, one of the most notorious trash talkers in the NBA, they both taste the same.

That’s just too much, even for NBA trash talking veteran Garnett.

The Celtic crossed the line with Carmelo Anthony when he apparently trashed talked about his wife during their most recent game. Anthony was so disturbed by the comment that he took the on-court spat off-court. The two had words in the locker room and again outside by the team buses. Eventually, police officers and team officials had to put an end to the dispute.

If you think the big man’s comment about Anthony’s wife was over the line, then clearly you don’t follow the NBA legend’s penchant for exceptionally foul trash talking. In perhaps the worst example of cruel trash talking in NBA history, Garnett wished The Spur’s Tim Duncan ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ – knowing full well that Duncan’s mother had recently died of cancer.

If that’s not despicable, then nothing is.

Carmelo was not about to take the jab about his wife lying down, which is why he approached Garnett on multiple occasions after the game concluded. While the big man might think all is fair in love and basketball, Melo’s intent was to let him know that nothing could be further from the truth. Refraining from insulting one’s wife or mother should be a given. For Garnett, he apparently missed the memo.

As for now, the matter is squashed.

”There’s certain things that you just don’t say to men, another man,” Anthony said, according to the Associated Press. ”I felt like we crossed a line, but like I said, we both have an understanding right now, we handled it the way we handled it. Nobody needs to know what was said behind closed doors, so that situation was handled.”

While Anthony might have ferociously defended his wife’s honor, it’s been reported that he’s no saint when it comes to the sanctity of his marriage. Rumors have circulated that the Carmelo has cheated on his LaLa during the span of their eight year relationship. The cheating rumors immediately lead to further speculation that a divorce was near for Melo and LaLa. Most recently, Asia Monroe claimed that Melo approached her via Twitter and the pair had a two month fling. The NY Knicks basketball star never publicly addressed Ms. Monroe, but LaLa Anthony stood behind her husband saying, “I trust him.”

Maybe the Anthony’s are that rare celebrity couple that keeps their private life private and works out of the kinks of their marriage behind closed doors. Since LaLa and Kim Kardashian are so close, maybe that trait will rub off on the reality TV star as well.

Here’s to hoping…

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
