Did Tyler Perry Make The Right Decision To Leave TBS For OWN?

Back in October, Tyler Perry partnered with Oprah Winfrey’s OWN to develop a series of programming and other projects for the cable channel. A decision that saw the director-actor-screenwriter-producer leave his business home over a TBS to make OWN his TV platform. Was this a good decision for Perry? Winfrey’s OWN TV station has been struggling since the channel launched back in 2011.

Cowen and Co analyst Doug Creutz looked at the collaboration thoroughly and predicted that Perry’s decision to move to OWN will work out good for both his company and Winfrey’s. Creutz mentions that even without the details of his two new scripted series Perry will air on OWN in 2013, he believes he still will bring profit. “We’re not sure Perry’s sitcoms are a great match for Oprah’s aspirational female-targeted brand, but he could potentially bring a meaningful ratings boost to OWN, helping that network climb to profitability in FY13,” Creutz said.

Creutz also mention that Perry could help OWN’s prime time audience increase by 10% or more even if he generates a smaller audience than when he was at TBS.

Perry is exciting about the new business venture and expressed himself by saying,

“As I sit here in Atlanta, it’s raining an abundant rain. It makes me think of my mother. She loved the rain and I do too. It is befitting that this announcement would be made on a day like today. Yes it’s true, Oprah and I have joined forces. We’ve formed a partnership for OWN and I’m super excited about it. I’ll fill you in more as we get closer to the airing of my shows. I have a lot of questions for you about this, so stay close, OK? I need your help.”
