Nicki Minaj has reignited her feud with Hot 97, asking the influential US radio station to stop playing her music.
Back in June, the station’s DJ, Pete Rosenberg, made a comment about Minaj at Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert, stating: “I know there are some chicks here waiting to sing ‘Starships’ later – I’m not talking to y’all right now…I’m here to talk about real hip-hop.”
Minaj pulled her performance immediately, and began a war with the station, defending her right to produce pop singles like “Starships.”
Last week, Hot 97’s program director, Ebro, argued Rosenberg’s comment ultimately rang true, as evidenced by the weak sales of Minaj’s latest release, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded The Re-Up, saying that the recent re-release was a failed attempt to reconnect with her hip-hop audience.
Nicki then called into the station to reignite her Hot 97 feud. “She used every woman’s stab she could – ‘I thought you were a man, you’re a cornball, I thought we were friends, you’re fake, everyone told me you were fake,'” claimed Ebro.
Ebro tried to argue back, saying, “Nicki, I’m helping you. I’m keeping you in the Hip Hop conversation. This Hip Hop thing’s a competition; you’re either ringing, or you’re not, and just like I said yesterday, I love you, boo and I’ll dust you off and make sure this thing is popping off again.”
Minaj, never to cave in, reportedly replied, “Don’t ever play my music again.”
So, for those of us keeping track, Minaj now has ongoing beefs with two separate DJs at Hot 97, Target, Steven Tyler and Mariah Carey–and that’s just in the last 3 months.
Minaj and Target fell out over Thanksgiving, when Target wouldn’t sell Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded The Re-Up on Black Friday because it had a parental advisory label.
Just last week, before the Target beef could even simmer down, Minaj also slammed former Idol judge and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, calling Tyler a racist. Tyler had calmly questioned Minaj’s ability to work with contestants from rural backgrounds in an interview. Minaj immediately fired back on Twitter: “I understand you really wanted to keep your job but take that up with the producers. I haven’t done anything to you. That’s a racist comment.”
Escalating her beef with Tyler, Minaj ended her remarks with the biggest slam yet: “LOL lets make him a shirt that says “No Coloreds Allowed” then escort him down 2 Barbara Walters so he can tell how he was threatened w/guns.”
And, of course, Minaj’s inner-judges’ table beef with Carey’s “highness” during American Idol auditions is now the stuff of pop culture legend. Those getting tired of Minaj’s constant public beefs should be excited for Idol because if there’s anyone who can out bicker, diva and beef Minaj–it’s Mariah Carey. The beef with Carey also happens in person, so Minaj can’t hide behind her Twitter blasts, as per the usual.
Season 12 of American Idol premieres January 16 on Fox.
