Buckhead Restaurant Icon Dante’s Going Down the Hatch

The end is nigh for Dante’s Down the Hatch, a 40-year-old Buckhead restaurant known for its fondue and crocodiles.

Atlantic Realty Partners said it’s reached an agreement to acquire the restaurant at 3380 Peachtree Road. It wants to build a luxury apartment tower in its place. The 10-story building would have 219 units, according to an announcement.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Restaurant owner, Dante Stephensen, told Atlanta Business Chronicle in July that he might have to close because of a dispute over his Fulton County property tax bill.

“I’m being faced with shutting down because I’m being taxed like a 40-story building,” Stephensen, who was recently inducted into the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Hospitality Hall of Fame, said in an earlier interview.

Dante’s Down the Hatch stands upon prime real estate, across the street from Lenox Square and adjacent to the 42-story Mandarin Oriental Atlanta.
