Yahoo! has the latest trailer for Jack Reacher, the action-thriller starring Tom Cruise as a former military police officer who investigates a string of sniper slayings. But Cruise is a distant second in my concerns when he’s sharing space with legendary German director / madman Werner Herzog, who plays a criminal boss who is presumably behind all the big bad things that Jack Reacher is investigating. Herzog, with his heartless eyes and cold, sinister voice, is absolutely born for the bad guy role. This new trailer gives us our first glimpse of him, and it makes me positively giddy. It also lets us see Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike, and David Oyelowo do things besides stand in the vicinity of Cruise, so that’s nice.
Jack Reacher is based on Lee Child’s 2005 novel One Shot. That seems like a perfectly fine name for me, one which at least suggests a crime movie (what with the “shot” and all), but studios have once again shown that they think that full names are what draws people in. It thus joins the ranks of John Carter, Alex Cross, Larry Crowne, and more. Woop-de-doo. The film will be released on December 21st.
