Michael Vick Must Lead Eagles To Playoffs . . . Or Else

Blog Home

Having a good year is not enough for Michael Vick to stay in Philadelphia with the Eagles. It’s playoffs or bust, according to ESPN, meaning if Vick does not lead his team to post season play, his job security will become shaky at best.

The report said league sources indicate they “believe” this could be Vick’s last season in Philly if he does not sure up his game and carry to the Eagles’ to their potential.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, has already said that an 8-8 season from the Eagles is “unacceptable.” Andy Reid said is not concerned about those comments , but if Philly is erratic in the regular season and misses the playoffs, it stands to reason that the coach would be bounced.

And since Reid is inherently tied to Vick so it’s very possible a coaching change would lead to a quarterback change. This is even more likely given the salary numbers ESPN reports for Vick.

If Vick is on the Eagles roster come Feb. 6, 2013, $3 million of his salary becomes guaranteed. If he’s released, as ESPN reported, Vick would be owed nothing and his monster contract — valued at $100 million when he signed it —  would come off the books.

So it’s not a huge stretch to say that, should Philly fall apart, miss the playoffs this season and fire Reid, Vick could end up getting the boot as well.

It appears Vick will be at the helm all season. No way Reid will put his future in the hands of rookie backup quarterback Nick Foles, no matter how much potential he has. Vick has not been solid and he hasn’t looked like the quarterback everyone expected this year. But it’s not all on Vick — the play-calling and protection for him hasn’t been superb. But he has to overcome that with wise decisions and by securing the ball.
