'The Lone Ranger' Teaser Poster Surprisingly Cool

On Monday, we shared some new images from The Lone Ranger, the latest and greatest Johnny Depp/Jerry Bruckheimer/Disney super-production. Directed by Gore Verbinski, the film stars Depp as Tonto and The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer as the title character. We got a glimpse of some typical Western iconography–the mesas, the horses–as well as a peek into some of the film’s predictably huge action setpieces.

But today /Film released the film’s teaser poster, and it’s surprisingly awesome?

Definitely not what I was expecting.

I don’t know what I love more: the cool, hand-painted wanted poster vibe or the fact that the brush-like typography looks like it was done with Tonto’s war paint. Perhaps that instead of plastering Depp and Hammer’s faces in front of some bad Photoshop, this poster actually looks like someone took the time to design and detail every aspect. Even the tagline refers to both the Lone Ranger’s famous mask and Tonto’s unusual black crow headdress and black war paint. It almost reminds me of the posters and marketing campaign for Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, which emphasized the power of symbols and masks over the star power of the cast.

After several delays and a tragic onset fatality, it seems we’re in the midst of a Lone Ranger news flurry. Set photos and a poster to begin the week, plus the trailer is set to debut tomorrow morning.

Check back here tomorrow to see if The Lone Ranger trailer is as cool as its poster.
