Box Office Report: 'Hotel Transylvania' Has Monster Start

After a month of awful performance in the box office, a well needed boost came from films Hotel Transylvania, Looper and Pitch Perfect.

Hotel Transylvania debuted to an estimated $11 million on Friday, which means it could do over $40 million for the weekend. Sony Pictures’ prediction is a little more conservative at $38 million, however, it turns out that Hotel Transylvania is out to a monster start and is on track to beat the record for all time openings in the month of September. Audiences gave it a A- CinemaScore, so expect good turn outs for weeks to come.

Looper took second place, grossing an estimated $6.9 million on Friday. That compared to similar action sci-fi movies like, Source Code and Surrogate, which both made $5.5 million. Audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore, which could help it earn over $20 million for the weekend.

Pound for pound, Universal’s Pitch Perfect was the best film in theaters this weekend. Only showing in 335 theaters, Pitch Perfect was still able to place 6th place. The film made an estimated $1.75 million and it could get close to $5 million for the weekend. Pitch Perfect expands nationwide October 5th.
