'Stoker' Trailer Blends Drama with Horror

Nicole Kidman, with the help of Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, may have just won the award for today’s most terrifying and bizarre family drama with the new trailer for Stoker.

Stoker will be Oldboy director Chan-wook Park‘s first fully English motion picture and his first full length feature since 2009’s quirky vampire drama Thirst. Fans familiar with the South Korean director will notice his style prevalent throughout the trailer.

Fans will also notice that Stoker does not seem to depart much from Park’s chosen blend of psychological thrills, family drama and obscurity when it comes to subject matter. Written by actor Wentworth Miller (of all people), the script for Stoker was part of 2010’s Black List that names all the best unproduced scripts available on the market.

The synopsis follows India Stoker, the daughter of a recently departed man. India’s Uncle Charlie – who she’s never met before – coms to live with her and her slightly unstable mother. Though ultimately charming, India suspects this man has ulterior motives and slowly but surely comes more and more infatuated with him.

The casting for Stoker seems to be everything concerning the term air-tight. Mia Wasikowska, coming fresh off her success in both Lawless and Alice in Wonderland seems more than an apt choice to play the lead. Matthew Goode‘s charm, as showcased in Watchmen and A Single Man, seems to carry over here in the best way. Nicole Kidman seems to be cherishing the role as the unstable mother, bringing her own brand of insanity to the already crazy mix of curious, predatory, and erotic themes.

Stoker has quite a lot to live up to with this sort of trailer, as does Chan-wook Park, Nicole Kidman, and Matthew Goode. Their resume’s alone should make this one worth checking out. Enjoy!
