Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa Bryant set off a media firestorm when New York Daily News released portions of her interview that quickly reaffirmed for many that she’s a gold digger. The paragraph that caused a hail of criticism to descend on the 30-year old when something like this;
“I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.’
It’s easy to see how Vanessa’s comment could be “misconstrued” so she released a statement to clarify,
I’m sad to hear that comments in my New York Magazine interview are being misconstrued and taken out of context. I have and will continue to support my husband’s dreams. I have been with Kobe for 13 years. I accepted his marriage proposal PRIOR to him winning any of his 5 championships with his teammates.
For anyone to think otherwise is wrong. It is not about being married to a ‘winner’ it is about our sacrifice as a family.
Several months ago Vanessa was under scrutiny again when she filed for divorce from Kobe soon after their 10th year anniversary. Reportedly Kobe’s wife was advised by her mother to wait to maximize her payout. The gold digger comments were relentless but Kobe obviously knows something the public doesn’t and pleaded to reconcile with his estranged wife. As of right now the Bryants are on their way to reconciling albeit with Vanessa now owning the deed to three of Kobe’s mansions. 🙂
