An intriguing subject paired with a talented cast should produce movie magic, when Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson joins brilliant actors Jeffrey Wright and Anthony Mackie, along with American Idol Jordin Sparks, in a new film produced by singer Alicia Keys.
Called The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, the film will tell the story of two city kids forced to fend for themselves after their mothers are taken away by authorities. It will be directed by George Tillman Jr., director of Soul Food, Men of Honor, Notorious and Faster.
This has been a busy and exciting period for Hudson. She recently agreed to take a role in the upcoming season of the NBC hit, Smash, which focuses on the making of a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe. Hudson will play a Broadway star.
“It’s just the perfect opportunity,” she said about her role in Smash during an interview with the Associated Press. “It’s gonna be challenging, and I’m a little bit intimidated to play this big Broadway star, but it’s gonna be a great experience. I can’t wait to get started.”
While Alicia Keys has had several acting roles, most notably co-starring with Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Dakota Fanning in The Secret Life of Bees, for which she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, this is her first time serving as producer on a major Hollywood production.
Production for the George Tillman film is currently underway in Brooklyn.
