'The Dark Knight Rises' Earns An Estimated $160 Million Despite The Horrific Movie Shooting…

The Dark Knight Rises was on pace to make $160 million in the box office, which would be a record for 2-D films, but figures are uncertain due the mass shooting at a theater showing the Batman film in Aurora, Colorado.

Other media outlets have made some guesses that despite the incident, the film still earned $160 to $162 million.

If those numbers are correct, that amount would beat The Dark Knight debut in 2008 of $158.4 million. That amount would also give The Dark Knight Rises the third-highest domestic weekend opening ever, following 3-D films such as The Avengers with $207.4 million and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 with $169.2 million.

Dark Knight Rises  grossed $70 million from nine of the 17 countries where it debuted over the weekend, including the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea and Spain.

The real numbers have not been released because, Sony, Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal and Lionsgate joined Dark Knight Rises distributor Warner Bros in publicly withholding their usual revenue reports out of respect for the victims and their families in Colorado.

Box-office tracking service Rentrak, also did not report figures following the Colorado theater shooting that killed 12 and injured 58 at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises on Friday.
