Large Professor Recalls Working with Nas, Rakim, Busta Rhymes, Slick Rick to Sway Calloway – Video

Though Large Professor’s Professor @ Large album just dropped, the legendary producer/emcee has no issue recalling the past. In a recent interview with Sway Calloway on SwaysUniverse.com, Large Pro recalled one of his most famous tracks, “Live at the Barbeque,” which included a very young Nas’ recording debut. The song was featured on Main Source’s 1991 debut album, Breaking Atoms, and enlisted the assistance of Fatal and Akinyele.

“I always held Nas in a high regard,” said Extra P. “This dude came qualified, definitely. Always had my vote. I was like, ‘Yo, go full steam ahead with that right there. You rock that first.’ That’s why he’s on there first! Like yo, we just gon’ kick in the door!”

During the interview Large P. was asked to name his most impressive collaborators. “Definitely Nas. Definitely Rakim. And my man Slick Rick,” said Large Pro. “And Busta Rhymes! And Busta Rhymes. I’m going from a recording technique…you know, from that angle. Just to process and just to see these dudes that have churned out all of these ill songs, and just to see the process.”

Large Professor also compared and contrasted the different emcees’ styles. “When you see Rakim, going in, he got the big, thick notebook…and he’s sittin’ in between the speakers, and it’s like, ‘Yo, that’s Rakim, and this is his process!’ You see Slick Rick sit down, doing his vocals, and you see him going through all the different phases. Then you see a Busta Rhymes…I’ve witnessed all of this.”
