With a possible prison sentence looming over her head, Lauryn Hill made a surprise appearance at the Wawa Welcome America 4th of July concert in Philadelphia.
Wearing a pure white belted bubble dress with puffed sleeves, Hill stepped out onto the concert stage in Philly for the show on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Also featured on the show was Daryl Hall, Queen Latifah, Common and Joe Jonas.
Hill, 37, appeared in federal court five days ago in Newark and pleaded guilty to charges that she failed to file her taxes between 2005 and 2007—while making more than $1.8 million from royalties. Hill issued a statement weeks ago saying that she was trying to go underground to protect her family and thought filing taxes would reveal her location.
Hill, who has six children, faces sentencing in November and could face up to years in jail, a year for each count of evasion.
Hill also has other legal matters she has had to deal with in recent years, such as the clothing company, Via Davia Vintage, that claimed last year that Hill took a wardrobe of high fashion items for a tour in 2007 and never gave it back, and the guitarist in her band, Jay Gore, who claimed she would insult the band while he toured with her.
“After shows, Hill would demand that the musicians and road support personnel attend meetings where she would engage in a person-by-person critique and berating,” the lawsuit stated.
