Chris Rock Created 4th of July Controversy on Twitter

Chris Rock seems to have tweeted up a bit of controversy over the July 4th holiday.

The comedian, whose latest project is executive producing Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell for FX, ruffled more than a few feathers after sending out this message to his followers: “Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks.”

Rock is certainly no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to explorations of racism and stereotypes. One of his most controversial bits, “Niggas vs. Black People” from his 1996 special “Bring The Pain,” is also one of his most beloved, though he has backed off of performing it since. As Rock later told 60 Minutes, “By the way, I’ve never done that joke again, ever, and I probably never will. ‘Cos some people that were racist thought they had license to say nigger. So, I’m done with that routine.”

Rock has always mined comedy as a means for poking at sensitive topics, in some cases encouraging as much outrage as applause. But the comedian also sparks quite a lot of conversation, which is perhaps the goal (along with laughs).

While some quickly came to Rock’s defense, including actors Don Cheadle and Zach Braff who seemed to see the humor in the joke, others took the gag as unpatriotic and fired back. Libertarian-conservative blogger Jeff Schreiber went so far as to attempt giving Rock a quick history lesson: “Slavery existed for 2000yrs before America. We eradicated it in 100yrs. We now have a black POTUS. #GoFuckYourself.” And blogger David Burge had a more humorous contradictory take: “Good one! I bet your Guatemalan house staff got a good chuckle.”

However, some saw both the humor and relevance in Rock’s joke. Comedian and activist Elon James White, host of the web series This Week In Blackness, tried to add some perspective to the conversation, tweeting, “I just wanna ask everyone who’s mad at @ChrisRock–Is he wrong? IS. HE. WRONG?”

White later gave HuffPost his perspective on the controversy as well as why Rock’s tweet actually matters:

I find this Chris Rock backlash absolutely ridiculous. Really? Someone tells the truth and you mad? I’m American. I never claim otherwise. I never give the “We didn’t land on Plymouth rock” speech unless its in a really funny way. But part of being American, to me, is that I have to acknowledge all the bullshit that comes with it. Basically some folks came over, stole other people’s land, killed them, then started a country on the backs of my people, while killing them, and then at some point they freed the slaves but then oppressed them and killed them some more. Do I have the ability to do things here that I wouldn’t in some parts of the world? Yes. But my family paid the price for that in actual blood, sweat and tears. If more people were like Rock and acknowledged the truth maybe we’d be in a better place as a Nation.

For his part, Rock seems unfazed by the backlash, having disregarded the comments directed at him thus far on twitter. His last two tweets were about the Knicks and “2 Days In New York.”

  1. No controversy in what he said, It's the truth!

  2. I had several ancestors who served in the Civil war-one was killed Nathaniel Bradstreet Shurtleff, and two were POWs Roswell Morse Shurtleff and Giles Shurtleff. Giles formed and led the first all black regiment from Ohio. These men loved the US and sacrificed so that lesser men like Chris Rock may be free.

  3. Dee Miller says:

truth to power , no apology needed Mr. Rock

  4. Scott Riddle says:

Ok kids – seriously? See I have no white / slave karma- My dad is native american and my moms grandparents came from Poland so – no slaves for us. We actually got it worse off in many, many ways. If american is soooo awful. And I'm not saying that slavery was right. Or that there should not have been payment for the contribution that made this country started toward wealth. But seriously. Would you rather be living in Africa right now? Or thanking your ancestors for what they suffered so you could have it better. You do have it better? A lot better. You realize this right? And Chris? PLEASE. Take up a real cause. Like environmentalism.

Your family most likely didn't give two shits about freeing any Negros, just like modern U.S soldiers for the most part don't care about Iraqis. Why don't you research and see what happen to Chris Rock family after reconstruction. If your family had any part in that I bet you take credit for that.

  8. Dean Kane says:

African americans been free for lest than 50 years in reality.

  9. Dean Kane says:

Native are no were near as hated as Black people in America. Natives had treaties(most broken), given land(irony), live "tax free" now, etc etc.

African Americans also have European and Asian ancestry so they ancestral land isn't just Africa.

  10. Damaris Hochanadel says:

Dean Kane– And no one is more hated and ridiculed nor have been through more atrocities than the Jews but you don't see nor hear them whining about it. GET OVER IT!!!

  11. Wow.. so this is News? He posted his views, His Opinion, So What…Get over yourselves it's frigging Tweet from a $70 million Movie Star. SO WHAT!

  12. How do you know what my family members thought? Giles Shurtleff was an abolitionist who risked his life to end slavery. But to folks like you, all white people are evil. If Chris's Rock family suffered after reconstruction, it is tragic.

  13. Scott Riddle says:

mY POINT- If we live in a country with a black president? You can do anything. All this blame is tired. What about taking responsibility from the inside. The music and culture that glamorizes violence and misogyny.Inter cultural violence- I grew up in a %90 black hood. I have seen and lived it all kids. Why is it that about any other culture that comes to this country with nothing. Can work hard- get an education and get the American dream without complaints. This self victimization of the Afo culture has no productive purpose except to give a green light to not take action or responsibly. And keep yourselves repressed. And again. Would yo really want to be in Africa? No- even our poorest in American have a system the keeps them over fed- housed and living live royalty compared to Africa. Be grateful for what you have. If you don't like it? Change it. There are endless opportunities here in the USA. Look at Mr Rock- no education and worth $70 mil- I wonder how much he gives to help his people up?

  14. Hal who cares, it was a joke? "He's a comedian" your life should be too busy for you to worry about this or even care. Sometimes as men we have to say oh well? and let the woman bicker about things, people should be able to exercise their first amendment rights of free speech.

  15. Stan Chaz says:

    Chris Rock should have said:
it's the RICH white people's Independence Day.
'Cause the rest of us, all of us, are still in slavery, in this great land of ours.
The blood-sucking rich get richer… and richer….and richer – while the rest of us get shafted.
Those that have the most…want it ALL.
They feast on the finest steaks, as they drive a stake thru our lives, our hopes,
    and our children's dreams.
Their schemes and their frauds have brought this nation to the brink of ruin.
Then they have the gall to cry: bail us out – 'cause we're too big to fail.
But your babies are never too small…. to starve.
This is not an enlightened society. Heck- it's not even a functioning Capitalist society.
It's just pure, destructive, unchecked GREED… run wild.
Heaven help us in a Romney regime.

  16. Roy Woody Jr. says:

Funny IMO. He was just joking. Bet he won't be in the next Madagascar! LOL! Polka Dot Polka Dot Afro Circus!

  17. Anonymous says:

You got stupid Whites, you got stupid Blacks.. Neither side wants to grow up!

  18. Red Neck says:

You got Stupid Whites, You got Stupid Blacks.. Nobody wants to Grow Up!

  19. Chris Rock, 360,000 Union soldiers and an American President died fighting against slavery, and the problem has been fixed in America. Although a boil on our history, no one now living experienced actual slavery first-hand. By calling Independence Day a "white man's" celebration, you are segregating us all over again.

  20. Dean Kane says:

Hal who cares really, remember that's the past right? Chris Rock joke was accurate and if you're mad at that then that's too bad for you.

  21. Dean Kane says:

Damaris, did Jews get reparations yes or no? Did the world community not acknowledge the atrocities committed against the Jews in the 20th century? Could Jews not just change they names and blend in to the majority population? Were Jews killed in America for working, or going to church(ehh), or for going to school? Where they laws against Jews in the U.S? America was suppose to be the most free country in the world yet Black people have had freedom in it for LESS THAN 50 years. So save it.

Hell European Jews even got a state made for them in a land they never lived in. Israel makes up .001 of the worlds population for receive 1/3 of all aid given by the richest and most influential country in the world's history. The U.S has given Israel over $130 billion even though the U.S didn't do anything major to the Jewish people.

The crap that the Jewish people had to put up with was/is stupid and it's respectable how some of them lived very productive lives(expect the aid) but you can't compare European Jews who could blend in whenever they wanted to and Black americans who were hated on sight.

  22. Dean Kane says:

Scott Riddle the president is Black when it's convenient. Other times he's not black but also white when he's doing something great. He's black when shit is going wrong and when it's time to say "Black people stop complaining, you have a black president".

On your immigrant question, just the simple fact that you have compare immigrants to native citizens who ancestor been in North America longer than any other group not named Native Americans, Spaniards(from Spain), should tell you all you need to know.

Here's a little titbit, the most successful immigrant group in the U.S are……..African immigrants. Also read the book tittle "The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration" It's a great read yet it's also disgusting how U.S citizens were immigrants in they own country.

  23. Dean Kane says:

Chris family and many other should have had to suffer, at least not anymore than the average, they were a hard working people.

  24. You were right to put a question mark after "joke". Sometimes comedians let their resentment get in the way of their humor. Not a good idea.

  25. We're having serious dialog over a "joke"? can we stop please. If you dont like the joke, say you dont like the joke. but lets not have serious debate over a comedian attempt to be funny, it was his attempt to be funny so you could laugh, not to have a serious rebuttal.

  26. You're right, it was a tweet (not worth bringing to light here), not something he was being paid for. Otherwise, I would call my comment constructive criticism on his negativity. I don't want to meet the person who would think negativity is funny.
