The French film Intouchables is now in the hands of The Weinstein Company and Harvey Weinstein uncovered his plans to remake the movie an Englishversion. The film, which stars Omar Sy and Francois Cluzet made a lot of noise on the film festival circuit, acquiring eight nominations and five wins. Sy won a Cesar award for Best Actor beating out Jean Dujardin for The Artist. The film is about a wealthy quadriplegic who finds a new reason to live thanks to a vibrant caretaker.
Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx and Idris Elba are all being considered for the lead role in the new American version. While these are all fine actors who could all play this role with no problems, maybe its time to introduce a fresh face? The story told in Intouchablesis may be better suited for an actor who hasn’t been featured in major roles such as Heimdall in Thor or a vigilante slave in Django, or even Pookie from New Jack City. But Hollywood isn’t keen on bringing in untested talent. Just the thought of seeing a fresh face playing a role like this is wishful thinking.
Of course, it’s all going to come down to scheduling for these A-listers. Although the decision between Rock, Foxx, and Elba should be easy because this film is a potential Oscar contender.
Bridesmaids director Paul Feig and Colin Firth are already set to team up on the movie. Only time will tell how this plays out. Check back for more updates.
