In December, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith will celebrate their 15th year of holy matrimony. According to Jada, the key to their lengthy relationship was learning how to be “the best of friends.”
Back in 1997, the Smith couple tied the knot in a secret New Year’s Eve ceremony. Fifteen years later, the couple is still very much in love.
“Fifteen years! It’s amazing, isn’t it,” Jada Pinkett Smith told People at the New York premiere of her new film, “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.”
The stunning 40-year-old mother felt as if their marriage was “a beautiful journey with lots of chapters.” Although 15 years is a relatively long time in Hollywood marriage years, Jada felt as if this journey was just beginning.
“I was just doing the Today show, and there was a couple there who was celebrating 59 years of marriage, and I thought to myself, ‘15 years ain’t nothing, you know?’ It’s just the beginning. That’s the way I look at it,” Jada added.
Every man dreads finding the perfect way to celebrate their anniversary, but according to Jada, Will gets off the hook pretty easily. Jada said, “…usually on our wedding anniversary, we just give ourselves a high-five and go, ‘We survived another year, homie! Yeah!’”
Jada also took the time to squash all the rumors that her marriage was actually on the rocks. She considered the claims of marital troubles to be “ridiculous.” Will, along with son Jaden and daughter Willow, attended the premier of Madagascar 3 in New York alongside Jada who played the voice of the sassy hippopotamus, Gloria. Jada was more than excited to have her family attending with her.
“That’s the whole point of having family,” Jada told People. “Tell me what that’s going to look like at home if he doesn’t come to something as important as this!”
The Hollywood power couple admitted that they have matured and grown since they first met, and Jada believed that that was all a part of their “beautiful journey.”
