'Hatfields & McCoys' Blasts Away The Competition With Record Ratings

Hatfields and McCoys weren’t the only things being shot down last night on the History channel. Records were falling like clay targets at a shooting range when History’s three-part miniseries Hatfields & McCoys broke almost all of them with its first installment on Monday night.

With a gigantic 13.9 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, the post civil clan war show pulled in more total viewers than any other non-sports telecast on ad-supported cable in the history of the format. The latest episode of NBC’s America’s Got Talent and ABC’s The Bachelorette, were no match for the series, drawing in 10 million and 5.8 million viewers, respectively.

In the most sought after demographic (18-to-49 years old), Hatfields & McCoys drew in 4.8 million viewers. The average Monday night ratings for a broadcast was 1.65 million total viewers in the same demo at the same 9:00-11:00p.m time slot. Other shows on cable have pulled superior demo numbers than Hatfields & McCoys (Walking Dead snagged 6 million in 18-to-49 year-old demo). However, Hatfields & McCoys reigned supreme in the slightly older 25-to-54 demo with 5.8 million.

Hatfields & McCoys boasts a cast that includes Kevin Costner, Bill Paxton, Sarah Parish, Mare Winningham, Matt Barr, and Lindsay Pulsipher. The second and third part of the six-hour, three-part miniseries continues tonight and tomorrow. Will you be watching?
